Very close to Ben Luna Lodge on the same Southern exposure escarpment is the hillside hamlet of Abriachan about 8 miles away and can be approached by both the main road and the back road by Foxhole.

Abriachan was very famous in the past as the inhabitants were illegally distilling whisky and old still sites have been found many years later. The stills were situated well out of sight in this isolated area but close enough to Inverness to get a ready market for the

"Uisge Beatha"- Gaelic for "Water of Life"

Your adventure would start here in the morning at The Abriachan Forest  Trust site and enjoy the myriad of walks in this beautiful, haunting landscape through the community owned and managed forest and spend some time in the bird hide to watch over the lochan - Loch Laide - and identify the variety of waterfowl that appear…remember to bring binoculars!

You can walk along The Great Glen Way and look down on the mighty Loch Ness and maybe find one of the illegal stills left from days gone by.

Recently a new accolade was bestowed in the site here and that was Dark Sky Discovery Site.

Abriachan Forest Trust has been awarded ‘Milky Way’ class Dark Sky status,- the first location in this area to receive this acclaimed certification.

The status is only awarded by Dark Sky Discovery to areas that can get clear views of The Milky Way Galaxy

Astronomer and founder of Highland Astronomy - Stephen Mackintosh who helped The Forest Trust achieve this status said  "Abriachan is an amazing place for observing the night sky"

So when you are planning your trip to Ben Luna Lodge and The Highlands of Scotland this is another magical experience you can add to your ‘to-do’ list-

This is a real Adventure along with a cruise on Loch Ness; a walk around Culloden Battlefield, The Clava Cairns made famous in Outlander, Urquhart Castle and the a Dark Sky Experience to finish off your day.

Certainly here you can have Monsters…maybe Meteorites and The Milky Way.
