trip one best of the west

A STUNNING TRIP you really shouldn't miss!

Leaving the helipad at Ben Luna you will be looking West to the hills of Glen Affric and beyond to Kintail, banking South you will get your first aerial glimpse of the mighty Loch Ness-24 miles long and nearly 1 mile wide and falling to a depth in excess of 800 feet, and home to a very elusive lady.

On the banks is Urquhart Castle, a stronghold for hundreds of years originally built by The Picts-natives of these parts. We will now fly down passing Fort Augustus, previous home at The Abbey of a Benediction Community and of course The Caledonian Canal built in 1822 by Thomas Telford and about to celebrate its 200th Anniversary.

We follow the line of the canal passing over Loch Oich and Loch Lochy and The Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge over shadowed in the distance by Ben Nevis the highest mountain in  the UK at 4406 feet and sitting below another garrison town of Fort William.

Flying West with Loch Lhinnie and the hills of Argyll to the South we pass Loch Shiel where Bonnie Prince Charlie landed and was met by his faithful Highland Clans to begin The Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 and where there is a large monument to mark his arrival in Scotland.

To the east of this monument is probably the most famous railway viaduct in Britain here at Glenfinnan – this was used in the HARRY POTTER movies and a must visit for enthusiasts from all over the globe. Further West is Loch Morar with their wonderful sandy beaches where they filmed scenes from LOCAL HERO starring Burt Lancaster.

Passing over the fishing port of Mallaig and the isolate Knoydart Peninsula which boasts the remotest pub in Britain-The Old Forge.

To our east we have The Five Sisters of Kintail a magnificent mountain range and home to feral goats on the lower slopes.

Flying North with The Isle of Skye on your West and The Castle of Eilean Donan below - the location of the cult film HIGHLANDER with Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert, the ancestral home of the clan MacRae and probably the most photographed castle in Scotland.

Banking east we fly up Loch Carron passing over the bridge to Skye- and another world of Fairy Pools and Dinosaur footprints.

Flying East from Carron between Lochs Monar and Mullardoch , we will see The Caledonian Pine forest of Glen Affric - so similar to the outback of Canada, BBC filmed The LAST OF THE MOHICANS-PATHFINDER here in the seventies.

The last stretch of our whistle stop flight through The West Highlands passes over the village of Cannich and The CHAMBERED cairn at Corrimony- an ancient PICTISH BURIAL CHAMBER and finally we put down at our helipad at Ben Luna and inside to enjoy a well-earned dram followed by a sumptuous Highland Feast.

About Askernish Golf Course
In June 1891 “Old” Tom Morris accompanied by his companion Horace Hutchison travelled to South Uist at the request of the landowners to inspect and machair lands with a view to laying out a new course. “Old” Tom eventually laid out eighteen holes on the rolling dunes of Askernish Farm, declaring that the choice of links land was ‘staggering’.

The amazing story of the course weaves and twists for the next 117 years however, August 2008 saw the opening of “Old Tom’s” original eighteen holes plus seventeen fairways in place.

Open to members & non-members, comprises of three separate competitions on one the most uniquely natural and challenging courses in golf. 2019 saw 150 entrants from across the UK, Canada, Finland, USA, Germany and of course, the many locals.
